Food products are cheaper in Ukraine by 3.5% compared to 2012

 

Food products are cheaper in Ukraine. Thus, the consumer price indices decreased by 3.5%, in particular for eggs, tallow, milk, sugar, meat, oil etc.

Foodstuffs are becoming more available for Ukrainians. Thus, in April consumer prices reduced by 3.5% against last one. And it is despite the fact that in April there was a seasonal growth of prices for fruit by 3% and vegetables by 3.3%. However, according to the data of the State Statistics Committee, their prices are lower than last year’s by 7.1% and 16.6% respectively. The consumer price index for foodstuffs in April -May 2013 was 99.9%. Besides, in April eggs significantly dropped in price by 13.7%. Prices for tallow, processed cereals, milk, sour cream, rice, sugar, meat and meat products, cheese, margarine and oil were lower by 0.1-2.0%.

It should be also noted that over recent time Ukraine has considerably increased export of certain food products, especially vegetables. So, during the first quarter of this year compared to the respective period of last year, the export of potatoes increased more than fivefold and it was 7 thousand tons, cabbage — twofold and was 2.2 thousand tons.

Besides, the export of onions grew dozen times and it was up to 36.4 thousand tons, borsch set vegetables was up to 8.9 thousand tons. It should be mentioned that Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine earlier stated the stable price situation at the food market. Thus, Mykola Prysyazhnyuk, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine announced that the initiated by the Government and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food measures, which are directed at the development of infrastructure of food market provided well-balanced price situation at the domestic market.

«In Ukraine there are 4 wholesale agricultural markets in Kyiv, Lviv, Donetsk and Mariupol, 7 more are on the stage of construction. There are no mediators who unreasonably raise the price. People can buy necessary products directly from producer. Besides, the capacities of potato storages were increased up to 1.4 million tons, which is 5-months’ need of annual consumption of Ukraine, and capacities of vegetable storages were increased up to 0.9 million tons,» Mykola Prysyazhnyuk mentioned.
