Cattle population decreased by 8% in September 2023

 

The number of cattle in Ukraine decreased by 200.2 thousand heads, which is 8% less compared to last year's period and 3% less compared to September 1 of the current year. The number of animals continues to decrease due to the negative consequences of the war for the livestock industry of Ukraine, — reports the analyst of the Association of Milk Producers, Heorhiy Kukhaleishvili.

According to preliminary data from the State Statistics Service, as of October 1, 2023, 2 million 457.5 thousand cattle are kept in the domestic and industrial sector of Ukraine, including 1 million 327 thousand cows. Over the past year, the number of cattle in Ukraine decreased by 200,2 thousand heads (-8%), and the number of cows decreased by 95,4 thousand heads (-7%). Compared to September 1, 2023, the cattle population decreased by 76.9 thousand heads (-3%), including cows — by 14.3 thousand heads (-1%). About 38% of animals are kept at industrial enterprises, and 62% — at households.

In the industrial sector, 929.4 thousand heads of cattle are kept, which is 4.1 thousand heads (-0.44%) less than last year. The number of cows at enterprises decreased to 383.8 thousand heads, which is 4.6 thousand heads (-1.2%) less compared to October 1, 2022. Over the last month, the number of cattle at Ukrainian enterprises decreased by 3.8 thousand heads (-0.41%), including cows — by 3.4 thousand heads (-0.89%).

There are 1 million 528.1 thousand heads of cattle in the households, which is 196.1 thousand heads (-12.83%) less compared to October 1 last year. The number of cows in households amounted to 944.6 thousand heads, which is 90.8 thousand animals (-9.61%) less than a year ago. Compared to September 1, 2023, the number of cattle in households decreased by 73.1 thousand heads (-4.78%), and the number of cows decreased by 10.9 thousand heads (-1.15%).
