Swiss-ukrainian project developed flyer about lumpy skin disease

Considering the unfavorable epizootic situation regarding Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in neighboring countries and the insects occurrence because of warm season, the risk of LSD in Ukraine has risen sharply.

To increase awareness of the cattle owners about this disease and to prevent its spread State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection initiated the development of an information flyer on LSD and Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project produced it. National and international experts were involved into flyer development. 30,000 copies were published and distributed to the cattle owners by territorial bodies of SSFSCP.

The LSD causes large economic losses due to the significant reduction in the milk and meat production and the reduction in the quality of raw hides. Mortality from LSD in cattle is about 10%. The virus is transmitted through insect bites (flies, mosquitoes, ticks), skin lesions, saliva, nasal discharge, milk, semen. The spread of the disease is associated with the movement of cattle. The causative agent of the disease can also be spread through contaminated feed, water, equipment and inventory.

Outbreaks of LSD were reported on Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Georgia, Russia, therefore Ukraine is in a zone of danger. It is extremely important that owners of cattle know about LSD, understand it danger, how to prevent disease and know what to do in cases of suspicion of disease occurrence.
