Cattle numbers continue to decrease

 

In 5 months of 2023, the number of cattle in Ukraine decreased by 219.6 thousand heads compared to last year's period. Also, according to the results of May 2023, the number of livestock in farms of all categories decreased by 5.5 thousand heads. In May, the number of cattle continued to decrease due to the challenges of wartime, an increase in the volume of slaughter, as well as the export of animals by live weight, — reports the analyst of the Association of Milk Producers, Georgy Kukhaleishvili.

According to preliminary data of the State Statistics Service, as of June 1, 2023, 2 million 544.3 thousand cattle are kept in the domestic and industrial sector of Ukraine, including 1 million 350.2 thousand cows. Compared to June 1, 2022, the cattle population in Ukraine decreased by 219,6 thousand heads (-8.63%), and the number of cows decreased by 103 thousand heads (-7.63%). In short-term dynamics, compared to May 1, 2023, the cattle population decreased by 5,5 thousand heads (-0.22%), including cows — by 5 thousand heads (-0.37%).

In the industrial sector, 929.6 thousand heads of cattle are kept, which is 1.59% less than in the last year's period. The number of cows at enterprises decreased to 387,7 thousand cows (-1.13%). Over the past month, Ukrainian industrial farms have reduced their livestock by 7.4 thousand heads (-0.80%), including cows by 2.7 thousand heads (-0.70%).

There are 1 million 614.7 thousand head of cattle in the homestead sector, which is 12.68% less compared to June 1 last year. The number of cows in households decreased to 962.5 thousand, which is 10.24% less than last year. Compared to May 1, 2023, the number of cattle in households increased by 1.9 thousand (+0.12%). Although, the number of cows decreased by 2.3 thousand heads (-0.24%).
