In March Ukrainian dairymen were very much hoping for positive market changes. But alas, the expectations were in vain.
First, Belarus will close one of the main channels for exports of Ukrainian cheese products at the end of the month, and apparently this time for a long time. In addition, strengthening of hryvnia worsens position of exporters. At the same time, external demand and butter prices have further decreased. Prices for milk powder and whey also did not grow. Apart from that, Lent has began and domestic sales of milk products decreased.
Forecasts for a quick improvement in market conditions are modest for several reasons, including the coming Ramadan in Muslim countries, which are among the main importers of Ukrainian dairy products.
In general, if the temporary, Lent time reduction of sales are not taken into account, domestic sales of dairy products have increased and, despite high prices, are active. The supply of raw milk is growing, and its price will decrease in the near future.
With the start of the «big milk» season, the situation in the dairy market will improve.
